A native of Milwaukee, WI, she was born in Chicago, IL to Norman Lewis and Carole Nellum and raised by her loving grandmother Mattie Baker, whom she affectionately calls “Ma”. She is the first to female graduate from High School in her immediate family. Lady Carswell is a 2009 magna cum laude graduate of Lane College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She received a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and was inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society in 2011. Lady Carswell received a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in 2015. Lady April is an honored recipient of the SREB Doctoral Scholars Fellowship. She completed her doctoral education at the University of Memphis, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the School of Public Health in 2016. She has more than 10 years’ experience as a Public Health practitioner specializing in minority and women’s health. Dr. Carswell has published 6 peer-reviewed journal articles and has delivered more than 20 scientific and community presentations.
In 2014, First Lady Carswell met the Founder of Covenant Church, the late Bishop Quincy L. Carswell during a visit to Atlanta, GA and was introduced to Pastor Quincy L. Carswell, II shortly thereafter. In 2017, she married Quincy L. Carswell II, who is the Lead Pastor of The Covenant Church, Decatur GA. They have two sons, Quincy, III and Wesley Elijah. Lady April is the Women’s Ministry Lead at The Covenant Church. The mission of The Covenant Women’s Ministry is to empower, encourage and equip the women of God with the word of God. She knows that God set her apart for His divine purpose and does not take the call to love and lead by example lightly.
Lady Carswell has served internationally in both Nicaragua and Haiti where she completed weeklong mission trips as a young adult at her former Church, Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis, TN. There she also served on the Church Advisory Board as the Young Adult Member-At-Large and was an active member of the Young Adults Ministry.
Dr. Carswell is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and a passionate entrepreneur with Mary Kay Cosmetics Inc. As a wife, mother, First Lady, Scientist and entrepreneur, she believes in encouraging and challenging everyone God send across her path to be the best version of themselves. Her favorite scripture is Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. She delights and finds solace in knowing that God’s plans are so much bigger and better than her plans. Through her genuine and authentic nature, she embodies Luke 12:48 “to who much is given, much is required”.
Her greatest joys and proudest moments come from being a wife and mother. Lady Carswell enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, laughing and spending time with her family.
