And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
GENESIS 17:2
THE CHRONICLES OF COVENANT
Over 30 years ago, Reverend Quincy Lavelle Carswell sat on the steps of a small house in Southwest Atlanta after enduring humiliation, scandal, and shame. In that painful moment of seeking direction, God led him to the opening book of the Bible, where He spoke to Abram saying, “And I will make my covenant between me and thee and will multiply thee exceedingly.” From that revelation, Covenant Baptist Church and Ministries was birthed on July 4, 1993, inside the historic City of Atlanta OIC Building Auditorium. The ministry began humbly with twelve members, four of whom were the Carswell Family. The remolding, renewing, and re-envisioning that God performed in Reverend Carswell’s life ignited a passion to reach people in states of recovery and restoration. Our logo still reflects this calling: one hand reaching upward in need, one hand reaching downward in help, and both hands meeting at the center of the cross — a symbol of the redemptive covenant God made with us through Jesus Christ. As Covenant grew both spiritually and numerically, it soon became clear that a larger space was required. Through prayer, the undeniable grace of God, and the sacrifice of faithful partners, our first property was acquired at 1049 Custer Avenue in Atlanta during the Spring of 1996. This season marked significant growth and sparked the transition to Covenant Ministries, emphasizing a broader vision and expanded ministry offerings.By 2002, ongoing growth confirmed the need for yet another move. God guided us to a vacant property near Glenwood Road that would ultimately become our long-term home. Construction began in early 2003 while we worshiped at our interim location at 3283 Columbia Woods Drive in Decatur. During this time, Covenant became a well-respected presence within the Columbia Cluster and DeKalb County, establishing strategic community partnerships that strengthened our reach and influence. After years of prayer, perseverance, and preparation, Covenant marched into its newly constructed sanctuary on December 30, 2007 — a building affectionately known throughout Atlanta as The People’s Cathedral. From this spiritual landmark, Covenant’s footprint expanded across metro Atlanta, the nation, and the world. Lives were transformed, families restored, the Holy Ghost moved freely, and the favor of God rested upon the house. In January 2020, after the passing of our Founder, leadership transitioned to his son, Bishop Quincy Lavelle Carswell, II, who assumed the mantle of Senior Pastor. Under his visionary leadership, The Covenant Church has undergone a revitalization marked by renewed excellence, stronger organizational structure, expanded ministries, and forward-moving innovation. Worship has been enhanced, discipleship deepened, outreach broadened, media and technology upgraded, and leadership development strengthened for long-term impact. The church has reemerged with a fresh identity, a refined culture, and a clear commitment to both spiritual and community transformation. Now located at 1600 Agape Way, Decatur, GA 30035, The Covenant Church continues to thrive as a multigenerational, multicultural, mission-driven ministry. With renewed auxiliaries, expanded digital influence, increased community engagement, and a restored culture of excellence, Covenant stands as a living testimony that God still keeps His promises. And with full confidence, we cling to Christ’s declaration:“...the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” —John 14:12 KJV
